Enjoy a Healthy Holiday Season with The Brand New ONE

Traditional Christmas Dinner: (c)iStockPhoto/DNY59While the late, great Andy Williams may have crooned that “it’s the most wonderful time of the year”, and it certainly is for most of us, we all know that the holiday season tends to usher in a period of excess. That’s in addition to a recent Conference Board of Canada report indicating that Canadians’ salt, sugar and bad fat intake is still much higher than it should be all year long. December and January are also the months with the highest incidences of heart attacks.

It seems to be easier at this time of year to overindulge and make unhealthy choices. Big family dinners and getting stuffed with sweets are de rigueur. However, with a little planning, preparation and a few common sense tips, the holidays can be as much a healthy time as they are a happy time.

The holidays are also a period that can be fraught with high emotions, stress and increases in depression. Protecting and nurturing our mental health is just as important as making healthy dietary choices during this season. Here are some tips from the Mayo Clinic to help manage holiday blues and blahs.

This season should be filled with festive fun and loving togetherness with family and friends while keeping an eye on potential physical and emotional health pitfalls. That’s why The Brand New ONE has a myriad of ways for you to celebrate, enjoy and keep healthy and happy throughout the holidays. From delicious and healthy recipes featured in Fed Up!, The Sweet Truth and Naturally Delicious, to surrounding yourself with the sights, smells and loving spirit of the season with great ideas featured in Everybody Nose and Empty Nesters, The Brand New ONEhas it all covered for the holidays.
